Megagames are a variety of tabletop game that involve 30-100 people, popularized mostly in the United Kingdom. It has been a tradition of UWL History Club to host these expansive events, providing a unique opportunity for students at UWL and the surrounding area to participate in large tabletop-esque roleplay events. The materials are typically purchased or licensed from a dedicated gamemaker then modified to fit the needs of the organization running it.
For Cross and Crown is History Club's take on the megagame genre, combining the elements from our weekly meetings that get all students engaged in history and the scope of large-scale wargaming. Designing the game and materials in-house gives us the opportunity to tailor it to our audience from the get-go, and focus on an easy player experience so it's as easy to play as possible for all participants while the systems beneath the game do the heavy lifting in balancing the game's various mechanics.
For Cross and Crown was originally designed by the College History Club Events Team in Fall of 2025. It was ran as a weekly meeting to great success, and plans began winter of that year to expand it into a megagame, increasing the player cap more than twofold.
This is the first megagame ran by the History Club since Spring 2025, making this an exciting first opportunity for many students who could not attend First Contact, our last megagame that broke the record for largest megagame in North America.
For Cross and Crown seeks to explore the struggles in power between the secular and religious world of Medieval Europe. Every role's power is checked by the ability of another, and players must work together to accomplish their goals. The Middle Ages are perhaps the most misunderstood era in history, and this event seeks to build interest and understanding through its gameplay elements.
